In The Land and I, Palestinian artist Nabil Anani sees himself as deeply connected to the earth he paints, reflecting how the land is central to his identity and existence, as well as to the lives of his people. The exhibition showcases Anani's vibrant, textured paintings of the Palestinian landscape, representing a vision of a free, untouched Palestine without barriers, checkpoints, or settlements.
Using organic materials such as wood, straw, herbs, and seeds, Anani incorporates elements of the land directly into his art. This grounding of his work in the physicality of the land reclaims the Palestinian landscape from the forces of colonialism, emphasizing a sense of belonging and continuity. His art erases the divide between people and land, presenting them as a single entity with a shared history and future.
Anani’s paintings, featuring olive groves, trees, and rural scenes, highlight the disrupted yet enduring relationship between Palestinians and their natural surroundings. For him, the land is not a backdrop but an active participant in the story of Palestinian struggle and hope for freedom. Through his work, Anani envisions the land as a living, breathing entity, intertwined with the people, and imagines a future where both are free from oppression. The Land and I serves as a profound expression of Anani’s connection to his homeland and his desire for liberation. This exhibition runs until January 2015 at Zawyeh Gallery Dubai.
