Experience a live fusion of digital kinetic painting and improvised music as pioneering artist Samia Halaby performs alongside the Kinetic Painting Group in a unique audiovisual event. Part of Electric Dreams: Art and Technology Before the Internet, this performance will be followed by a conversation with curator Val Ravaglia and will also be livestreamed on YouTube.

Samia Halaby: A Digital Art Innovator

A trailblazer in early digital art, Halaby began coding kinetic abstract paintings on her Amiga computer in the late 1980s. She developed a program that allows her to paint in real-time, synchronizing with live music. Her work bridges technology, abstraction, and improvisation, influencing digital and generative art today.

The Kinetic Painting Group

Performing with original members Kevin Nathaniel Hylton and Hasan Bakr, Halaby’s group merges visuals and sound in a dynamic, spontaneous composition. Their collaboration blends African, Middle Eastern, and electronic influences, creating an immersive, multi-sensory experience.

More Opportunities to Watch

Halaby will also perform at Nottingham Contemporary on 7 February with musician Guohan Zeng.

Organized by Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational in partnership with Hyundai Motor, this event offers a rare chance to witness abstract digital art in motion.
