Facebook plans to change its name to reflect its upcoming projects in creating the virtual world of Metaverse, according to The Verge, citing an informed source.

The site indicated that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg intends to mention the name at the company's annual "Connect" conference on October 28, but it is likely that the name will be announced earlier.

The new name will reflect the company's ambition to become more than a company specialized in social networking sites, and the new name may place the blue Facebook brand under the umbrella of a parent company that supervises other groups, such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and others.

Thus, changing the name may distance the parent company from the accusations that were recently leveled at its Facebook site, after the Wall Street Journal transmitted a number of internal documents that showed details of the company's handling of a number of controversial issues.

And the journalist at "The Verge", Alex Heath, stated that his sources indicated that the new name is kept secret within the company's walls, and that it is hidden even from high-ranking managers, and it is likely that the name of the company is related to what has to do with the horizon (Horizon), which may match the name of the company. The virtual reality glasses that the company has been developing for years, and he also noted that the name of the application was changed to “Horizon Worlds” in a test conducted by Facebook on the professional communication service “Horizon Workrooms.”

It is not surprising that technology companies change their names according to their goals. In 2015, “Google” changed its internal organization to become under a parent company called “Alphabet”, indicating that it was no longer limited to search engines, but rather expanded to include a huge group of specialized companies. In different sectors, from smart cars to health technology.

In 2016. Snapchat changed its name to Snap Inc. It started promoting itself as a camera company, and in the same year introduced Spectacles with a camera.
